Background
Buffalo, NY native Lisa Meyerhofer began her flute studies at the age of 8. An alumna of Lancaster High School, Lisa graduated Valedictorian of her class. She was Assistant Principal Flute of the Greater Buffalo Youth Orchestra, and a winner of the Orchestra’s annual Senior Concerto Competition. Lisa earned her BM from Ithaca College, studying with Wendy Mehne and Kelly Covert, and her MM from Northwestern University, studying with John Thorne.
Lisa is currently Acting Assistant Principal Flute of the Omaha Symphony, where she has also served as Third Flute/Piccolo. Additionally, she holds positions as Principal Flute of the Des Moines Symphony, Second Flute/Piccolo with the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera, and Principal Flute at Opera in the Ozarks. She has also been Principal Flute with the Lexington Philharmonic in Kentucky, performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Canton Symphony Orchestra (OH), and was selected as a quarter-finalist for the 2018 National Flute Association Young Artist Competition, for which she performed at the convention in Orlando, Florida. Other accomplishments include Fourth Prize in the 2017 Walfrid Kujala International Piccolo Competition, and competing as a quarter-finalist for the 2016 National Flute Association Young Artist Competition in San Diego. She has played with the Southern Tier Symphony in Western New York, and participated in numerous summer flute institutes at Orford (Canada), Oberlin Conservatory, Peabody Institute, Akron University, Holy Cross Monastery in the Hudson Valley, and Ithaca College, performing in masterclasses led by flutists such as Robert Langevin, Michel Debost, Kathleen Chastain, Marina Piccinini, George Pope, Gary Schocker, Claudia Anderson, Jill Felber, and Leone Buyse. Throughout college, she also performed in masterclasses with Jennifer Gunn, Cynthia Meyers, Stephanie Mortimore, Mark Sparks, and Jean Ferrandis.
Education
Lisa graduated summa cum laude from Ithaca College in 2011, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education and Performance. In her time at Ithaca, Lisa excelled in both performance and education, consistently placing in top ensembles including the Ithaca College Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and Chamber Orchestra. Aside from major ensembles, Lisa performed in various opera and musical productions, played in a flute and guitar duo, and was a four-year member of both the IC Bell People handbell choir and The Fifes and Drums of Ithaca.
Lisa received her Master’s degree in Music Performance from Northwestern University in June of 2014. While at Northwestern, Lisa gave two solo flute recitals, and performed in a flute and guitar duo, as well as a woodwind quintet. She also performed in the Northwestern University Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Contemporary Music Ensemble, and Baroque Music Ensemble, and studied the traverso with Richard Graef. In addition to her performance experience at NU, Lisa designed the new website for the University flute studio. She also worked as an intern at the office of the National Flute Association in Chicago, and at the 2014 and 2015 NFA conventions in Chicago and Washington, D.C.
Teaching
Lisa has been teaching flute and piccolo for 10 years. As a flute instructor, Lisa believes that every student has the potential to do anything they aspire to, and strives to find the best solutions to help each individual reach their goals. She firmly believes that no matter what a person’s future may hold, the lessons learned through music can be transferred to all aspects of life.
Lisa's earlier teaching experience includes a year of student teaching at Dryden Elementary School near Ithaca, Senior student teaching at Akron Central School (NY) at the Middle and High School level, and a year of private flute teaching at Twin Village Music in Lancaster. She currently maintains a private flute and piano studio at her home in Lancaster, and is also a private tutor in Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, Geometry, and Algebra.
Interests
With a particular passion for opera, Lisa has had various opportunities to perform in pit orchestras. At Ithaca College she performed in productions of Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges, Rachel Portman’s The Little Prince, and Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, and for Northwestern University's Production of Adamo's Little Women. She has played flute and piccolo in the Opera in the Ozarks orchestra for 8 seasons, performing in various works including Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore, Verdi's La Traviata, Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann, and Bizet’s Carmen.
Outside of music, Lisa especially enjoys reading, coloring, making paper beads, spending time outside, photography, riding her bike, and cooking. Her favorite shows include Frasier, The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Stargate, and Doctor Who.
